I am Irish, honey!

Happy St. Patrick’s Day everyone!

To celebrate my Irish heritage, I am sitting here eating a lovely lunch of leftover spaghetti accompanied by a 24 oz. Dr. Pepper. Very grand, indeed!

On St. Patrick’s Day, I always think of a girl I knew when I was about 10. Kathy L. and I were good friends until she moved to Florida (like all good people from New Jersey eventually do). We would always talk about being Irish. Anyway, she signed my autograph book before she moved. (Why did I have an autograph book anyway?) Her closing line was, “I am Irish, Honey!” I still crack up when I think of that line.

Corned beef and cabbage. Oh! How I miss that!

See, when I was growing up, every year on St. Patrick’s Day we would have corned beef and cabbage. I think if you ate it any more than once a year, your life expectancy would be around fifteen years old. Say what you will about my parents, but they did want us to live long enough to get us out of the house.

So, we would all sit down to dinner as a family with big, steaming bowls of corned beef, cabbage and potatoes. And it sounds gross. I know. But it was really one of my favorite meals of all time.

I don’t know if it was because of the food, the tradition, or the fact that my family sat down to a meal together in peace.
